About training

The Wheel band is based in Helsinki, Finland, and its artists are from the neighbourhood. Be it the keyboard magic and experience James Lascelles brings, the drums of Santeri Saksala, or the bass from Mikko Maatta, Wheel Band has created mindspace with its fresh music. Having started out on their individual journeys in the late 1900s or early 2000, they came together as a band in 2015. James is in charge of the vocals, and brings his rich voice to the stage.

JC is a driving force in the group, and charts the direction for it. With a niche sound, and influences of grunge and post hardcore, there’s plenty to like and love. Their expansive compositions and grounded music and heroes who are true and close to reality have been the cornerstones of their success till date. Highly versatile guitar, a great bass and a chance meeting in 2015, made the band come together. And while the artist Mikko Maata left in 2019 after the release of their album, the replacement with Aki has filled that gap as well. Here’s more about them.

    James Lascelles
  • This 1953 born British musician, was interested in rock and roll music and jazz since his childhood. Part of a band since the 1970s, that believed in road shows, he performed on various occasions. In the 1980s he took to world music and performed in many other countries, and parts of West Africa as well. Known for playing the keyboard and his wonderful voice, he earned fame both for his solo performances and his group gigs. He became a part of the Wheel band during 2019, and brought his years of experience and wonderful voice to the band, thus helping to take the debut album to fame. In charge of the vocals and guitar with Wheel, he is known for his power and magic.
  • JC Haltunnen
  • Also on the Wheel Guitar, JC, as he is lovingly known is brimming with energy, that he brings to his music. Having been around playing with different bands since 2010, his music is fresher and soulful. Having met other members of the crew during an event, he calls that to be an event that has changed him for the better. Adding collaborative power, he amazes with his creativity and finesse.
  • Aki Virta
  • On the bass, replacing Mikko, came Aki Virta, and has brought with him much needed fire. Having joined the band in 2019, he has quickly integrated his skills with others. A friendly demeanor and great enthusiasm to learn and experiment, makes Aki a great asset for the team.

    Santeri Saksala
  • The drummer in the band, Santeri brings in fresh energy to the group. Having come from the Von Hertzen brothers band, Santeri joined the band in 2015. That was a time when the budget was small, and with the minimal shoestring budget, the group created its first material. Having generated their first few songs in the first two days itself, there was no turning back for Santeri and the Wheel, which just kept rolling forward and evolving.
